Originally known as The Little Theatre in the Hay, the Theatre Royal Haymarket was designed by John Potter and built in 1720, making it the third oldest active theatre in London’s West End.

Recent years have seen substantial changes to the theatre. Their Masterclass programme, which gives young people the chance to learn from and be inspired by leading artists from theatre, film and TV, has undergone much expansion, and the theatre has also returned to the status of ‘producing house’ for the first time since 1982.

In 2006, the Theatre Royal Haymarket Company was founded, and has brought together several prominent creative artists such as Sir Ian McKellan, Patricia Hodge, Ruthie Henshall and Sir Patrick Stewart.

In 2011, Sir Trevor Nunn was appointed Artistic Director. During his season, the theatre saw productions including Terence Rattigan’s Flare Path, Tom Stoppard’s Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead and The Lion in Winter by James Goldman.
