The Lyric Theatre is the oldest theatre located on Shaftesbury Avenue in London’s West End, close to Soho and Chinatown as well as the Piccadilly Circus and Leicester Square stations on the London Underground.

Designed by C. J. Phipps, an English architect well-known for work on several theatres in the West End as well as outside of London, the Lyric Theatre opened on December 17th 1888. The construction was financed by Henry J. Leslie, whose production of Dorothy had generated a profit of £100,000 – a sizeable amount for the time.

Several notable productions to have played at the Lyric Theatre include, W. S. Gilbert’s comedic opera The Mountebanks (1892), George Bernard Shaw’s The Chocolate Soldier (1910), J. B. Priestley’s Dangerous Corner (1932), Love in Idleness (1944) by Terence Rattigan, and South Sea Bubble (1955) by Noel Coward starring Vivian Leigh. More recently there has been How The Other Half Loves (1972) by Alan Ayckbourn, Gigi (1986) starring Sian Phillips and Beryl Reid, Burn This (1990) starring Hollywood sensation John Malkovitch and Dance of Death (2003) starring Sir Ian McKellen.

In 2006, Thriller Live! made the Lyric Theatre its home and is still there today. Even more pertinently after his death in 2009, the show brings to life Michael Jackson’s best-loved hits, paying tribute to his celebrated stage performances.
