The Adelphi Theatre is located on the Strand, close to London’s popular Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square. Incredibly it has recently celebrated its bicentenary.

Starting off from humble origins as the Sans Pareil in 1806, an undersized venue for inexpensive productions, the site has since undergone three separate demolitions and reconstructions. Over the years, these four theatres buildings have held seven different names, including the Adelphi (1819), the Theatre Royal, Adelphi (1829), the Theatre Royal, New Adelphi (1858), and the Royal Adelphi Theatre (1867). The naming convention diverged away in 1901, with the moniker of the Century Theatre, but it quickly returned to its roots again – reverting to the Royal Adelphi within a year. The most recent reconstruction opened in 1930, losing the Royal tag to become the Adelphi, by which it has been known ever since.

In 1993, at the time when the Really Useful Group acquired the theatre, the Adelphi underwent a complete refurbishment, during which time the theatre’s Art Deco features were restored. It reopened to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s production of Sunset Boulevard, starring Patty Lupone, Rita Moreno, Betty Buckley, Petula Clarke and Elaine Paige and ran for more than 1,500 performances.

The Adelphi was also home to a triumphant revival of Evita in 2006, in Elena Roger’s debut on the West End.

2007 saw the rise of another popular production, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, which starred the winner of the BBC television programme Any Dream Will Do, Lee Mead, in the title role.

In 2012, the Adelphi housed a revival of Sweeney Todd, the musical thriller by Stephen Sondheim, starring household names including Imelda Staunton and Michael Ball before becoming the residence of The Bodyguard in 2013. After housing the musical Made in Dagenham, the theatre is now showing Kinky Boots.
