Why Watch ZooNation: Some Like It Hip Hop

Perhaps what is most impressive about the show is the sheer choreographic and musical range that comes together in an effulgent blaze as the story progresses. A savory display of humor, raw dancing talent, and expert storytelling, Some Like It Hip Hop is a milestone in the evolving nature of stage dramas. It includes R&B, soul, classic Schmaltz, beatboxing, and of course, rap!
Kate Prince herself is an internationally acclaimed choreographer known for shows like Into the Hoods and The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. With a talented cast capable of pulling off breathtaking dance maneuvers that blend in effortlessly with the underlying narrative, Some Like It Hip Hop is amongst Kate Prince’s best productions yet!

The Story

Drawing heavily from the Billy Wilder movie Some Like It Hot and bits of Shakespearean comedy, the show is primarily based on themes ranging from mistaken identity and cross-dressing to an oppressive government. When the governor is stricken by grief following the death of his wife, his rage turns to his subjects. All forms of free expression such as news and books are banned. Women are compelled to toil in domestic environments and factory workers are forced to work like machines. Two young women decide to rebel against their masters by comically dressing up in suits and showing off their hip-hop machismo. The rebellion grows, culminating in high-intensity dance battles that feature all the most recognizable modern dance moves including headspins, body flips, and vaults!

Critics Reviews

“If there was any doubt that hip-hop had finally grown out of the street and into the theatre, then Kate Prince’s new production dispels it.”
