She rose to fame alongside Ike Turner (then-husband) in the 1960s. Back then, her hits included River Deep – Mountain High, A Fool In Love, and Proud Mary. Everything came crashing down with her abusive marriage, but she rebuilt her life and made a flashy comeback in the mid part of the 80s.
Private Dancer, her 5th album, turned into an international success in 1984. Starring as Tina Turner is Nkeki Obi-Melekwe, and playing the role of her husband Ike is Ashley Zhanghaza. Phyllida Lloyd, who also directed Mamma Mia’s world premiere, is directing the show. Katoria Hall worked with Kess Prins and Frank Ketelaar to write the show. Others who help bring the musical to life include costume designer Mark Thompson, choreographer Anthony van Laast, lighting designer Bruno Poet, musical supervisor Nicholas Skilbeck, and sound designer Nevin Steinberg.
