The Taming of the Shrew

Shakespeare fans rejoice! A new production of The Taming of the Shrew is all set to hit the Barbican Theatres in London. This brilliant reimagination of the 1590s pits the men against the women. The only thing different in this rendition is that women are placed in charge. The Taming of the Shrew tickets is available online for those interested.

The entertaining plot

Based on one of the most popular plays by William Shakespeare, The Taming of the Shrew was a humorous look into the societal norms of the time, especially when it came to marriage and traditions. In the reimagining, directed by Justin Audibert from the Royal Shakespeare Company, the sexes of each character are reversed.

For instance, the original play comprised of three handsome bachelors – Gremio, Hortensio and Lucentio – seeking the hand of the beautiful Bianca in marriage. However, to marry her, they needed to find a suitable groom for her elder sister, Katherina. In the new production, the story remains relatively unchanged but instead of three men seeking to woo Bianca, it now includes three ladies trying to impress a man named Bianco. Like the original play, the three must first find a suitable bride for Bianco’s elder brother Katherine.

The rendition is just as funny as the original play but introduces a refreshing angle to the plot. The gender shift succeeds in keeping the production relevant in modern times.

A joy to behold

Audibert took inspiration from Naomi Alderman’s novel The Power in constructing an alternate reality of the late 16th Century where women dominate the opposite sex. While everything else remains the same, those purchasing The Taming of the Shrew tickets can get a glimpse of a fiercely matriarchal society during the Elizabethan period. Hannah Clark has woven magic with her apt costumes for the play, while the set design by Stephen Brimson Lewis is perfect for the period.
