The Spirit Part 2 arrives at Battersea Arts Centre

It is quite challenging to bring out the mind-boggling factor of a horror piece through physical activity on a stage. But when Thibault Delferiere is there, the stage becomes live with improvised music and visual art as he goes on to act in Jack McNamara’s play. Delferiere deals with the great philosophical ideas that are usually linked with human spirits. The Spirit will comprise of three different performances that can be evolving out of each other. The three parts, each one a masterpiece, can be watched as a rich trilogy or as individually standalone pieces of the theatre. Throughout the plays, McNamara has found to be highly appreciative of Delferiere’s acting skills.

Perspectives of the play

All the parts of The Spirit deal with the journey from servitude to freedom. Jack McNamara and Thibault Delferiere have collaborated for the second time to create this visually enthralling work of art. Their first project was Sisyphus, which was awarded the Mess Award and led to an invitation for them at the Sarajevo International Festival. In fact, McNamara has gone on record to give the entire credit of the play to Delferiere. He believes that Delferiere was the one to push him out of his comfort zone and make the play. Apart from the fascinating story, The Spirit Part 2 will have drummer Steve Noble playing the hauntingly beautiful music in the background that will invariably elevate the feel of the play

Delferiere’s performance is sure to spellbind the audience. The raw and intense energy that he performs with enables the audience to be transported out of the auditorium. It is needless to say that an experienced actor like him has acted in many a play in several cities. As a performer, he gives in all – his suffering, balance, matter or sexuality – in the play. In the 2nd part ‘The Lion’, the actor is at his fiercest. Since he has been rejected servitude, he is in his primal form and seeks to escape from the prison at any cost. His struggle for freedom finds a beat to Noble’s drums. As he is continuously taunted and agitated by baits, Delferiere makes a desperate attempt to build his strength.

The Spirit Part 2 – Things to bear in mind

Though all lovers of visual art are invited to watch this fantastic play, the psychological twists and turns of The Spirit Part 2 are not for the faint-hearted. The 2nd part consists of some on-stage nudity. Hence people only above the age of sixteen can come for the show. McNamara and Delferiere’s unsettling yet powerful play will continue for an hour without any interval.
