Show description: The Mentalists
The Mentalists is a comic two hander, centered on the bizarre relationship between two middle-aged men, Ted and Morrie, who find themselves holed up in an extremely bland room at a Finsbury Park hotel.
The thin and twitchy Ted is a fleet manager of an industrial cleaning products company. Fanatical and jumpy, Ted records a utopian message to the world whilst holed up in the hotel. In Ted’s utopia “lousy, selfish anti-social behaviour” will be punished.
The delightfully camp and more relaxed Morrie is a hairdresser by trade but also doubles as Ted’s cameraman. Morrie objects to Ted’s vision of utopia, claiming: “People won’t like all that control stuff.”
As the pressure mounts, the strange couple are forced to confront the darker side of their relationship as a moving and hilarious story of utopian visions and friendship unravel.
Richard Bean wrote The Mentalists in 2002 as part of the Transformation Season at the National Theatre. The award-winning writer of One Man, Two Guvnors and Great Britain, which became a Box Office phenomenon claims, “You can make jokes about anything.”
The BAFTA Award-winning writer, actor and comedian Stephen Merchant will make his West End debut playing Ted.
Steffan Rhodri, who is best known for the role of Dave Coaches on Gavin & Stacey and as Reg Cattermole in Harry Potter, is playing Morrie.
In 2012 Steffan Rhodri performed on the West End in Alan Ayckborn’s Absent Friends and Laura Wade’s Posh.
Talking about making his debut on London theatre, Stephen Merchant said:
“I’m going to be in a West End play. A hilarious, darkly poignant Richard Bean play no less. Come and see me and Steffan Rhodri doing proper acting in The Mentalists this summer.”
This comic two hand is directed by Abbey Wright, who has worked with many of the UK’s greatest directors, including Danny Boyle, Alan Rickman and Jamie Lloyd.
The Mentalists will be playing at the Wyndham Theatre from Friday 3 July until Saturday 26 September 2015.
