Writer Jez Butterworth, perhaps best known for his hitherto most successful play Jerusalem, made his theatre debut with Mojo at the Royal Court Theatre in 1995; winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.

The Ferryman is Butterworth’s first new play in five years since The River, which premiered in 2012 with a production starring Dominic West, Laura Donnelly and Miranda Raison. The River later transferred to Broadway’s Square theatre in 2014, with Hugh Jackman as the lead.

After several successful Shakespearean adaptations at the Old Vic – including Richard III and As You Like It – director Sam Mendes returns to the West End for yet another promising collaboration with Butterworth. Their previous collaborations include two James Bond films – Skyfall and Spectre.

The Ferryman Story

Set in rural Derry during the hunger strike of 1981, The Ferryman tells the story of the Carney farmhouse’s preparations for the annual harvest: a day of hard work on the land followed by a traditional night of feasting and celebrations. But this year they will be interrupted by an unexpected visitor…

Rob Howell (Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax, Matilda) will design The Ferryman, with lighting from Peter Mumford. The Ferryman is developed and co-produced with Sonia Friedman Productions (Sunny Afternoon, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child).

The Ferryman Cast

The 23 person cast of The Ferryman includes Paddy Considine (Peaky Blinders, The Bourne Ultimatum, Macbeth) playing the part of Quinn Carney. Joined by Considine is Laura Donnelly as Caitlin Carney, who starred in Butterworth’s 2012 play The River and actress Genevieve O’Reilly (Star Wars) playing the role of Mary Carney.
