The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
Mark Haddon’s bestseller wows the West End after wowing crowds at The National Theatre

The National Theatre’s sell-out production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is now playing at the Gielgud Theatre.

Directed by Marianne Elliot (War Horse), and adapted by Simon Stephens (Punk Rock) from Mark Haddon’s bestseller, Luke Treadaway plays Christopher, an autistic boy who heads out on a journey.

Christopher is fifteen, and we meet him standing beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog, Wellington. It has been speared with a garden fork, it is seven minutes after midnight and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in the book he is writing so that he can crack the mystery of who murdered Wellington.

Christopher has an extraordinary brain for a boy his age. He is exceptional at maths but is ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and he distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that turns his world upside down.

In its run at the National Theatre, critics fell over themselves to praise cast and performance, and London should rejoice that fans of the show can see it again. Michael Billington of the Guardian praised the “enormous flair” of the production, while Brad Pitt has optioned the book for a cinema adaptation. Having waited for the right moment to consent to a theatrical version, Mark Haddon’s story, published in 2003, bursts from the page onto its new visual stage.
