The play is set in the intriguing backdrop of Northern Ireland. The story revolves around the protagonist duo Conor and Niamh, who get caught up in a series of disturbing events. As coming-of-age youngsters, they soon find out that life in Derry-Londonderry is not all about Riverdance, leprechauns, and whiskey. Rather, they are to face testing situations one after another to get on with their lives. At the same time, they are to confront their families’ deep, dark secrets that are resurfacing out of nowhere.

Based on Kate Reid’s novel, The 4th Country is a poignant, thought-provoking, yet funny take on life in Northern Ireland. It is ambitious in its scope and resonates well with the modern urban struggles faced by the youth of the country. At the same time, it promisingly explores the politics and history of Northern Ireland, giving the audience a deep insight into the characters’ journey.

About Plain Heroines

The 4th Country is performed and produced by Plain Heroines, a theatre company led by female theatre artists who oftentimes produce witty, though-provoking plays on complex subjects. Their goal is to spark conversations on poignant issues that primarily set out to smash patriarchal stereotypes. Despite dealing with complex subjects, their performances never fall short of funny anecdotes and witty insights into the stories of ordinary women, who, in their own right, are quite extraordinary.

Like their previous productions, The 4th Country is also a powerful tale of powerful women. Written by Kate Reid, the play is directed by Gabriella Bird. She has been joined by a wonderful crew, including Catja Hamilton as lighting designer, Anna Reid as design consultant, and Ellie Fitz-Gerald as producer/ general manager. The cast features some incredible performers like Alfie Kennan, Rachel Rooney, Rebecca Pitt, Cormac Elliot, and the writer Kate Reid herself.
