Sunny Afternoon
Sunny Afternoon show description
The Kinks are arguably one of the biggest rock bands ever produced in the U.K., and legendary song writer and guitarist Ray Davies has inspired a Brit Pop generation.
Brothers Ray and Dave Davies formed the back bone of one of the world’s greatest bands, The Kinks, and their songs such as You Really Got Me, All Day and All of the Night, Lola, Dedicated Follower of Fashion, Dead End Street and of course Sunny Afternoon were not only huge hits but also inspired football terrace chants and inspired mod contempories.
Their songs have stood the test of time simply because they are brilliant songs.
Sunny Afternoon was the biggest UK hit of the summer of 1966, topping the charts and displacing the Beatles’ Paperback Writer. It all culminated in delirium as in that same summer of 1966 at Wembley, England football captain, Bobby Moore held aloft the World Cup as a hundred thousand fans in Wembley Stadium are singing Sunny Afternoon in unison.
Controversy dogged the Kinks, the lyrical content of their songs were considered so controversial that they were actually banned from playing in the US.
This new show in London, Sunny Afternoon depicts the leader of the Kinks, Ray Davies and tells his extraordinary life story. With music and lyrics by the legend himself, Ray Davies, and a new book by Joe Penhall.
Sunny Afternoon explores the rise to stardom of The Kinks set against the back-drop of a Britain transforming from the mild-mannered post-war conservatism of the 50s through the advent of Rock ‘n’ Roll and the start of the riotous 60s. The show explores the euphoric highs and agonising lows of one of Britain’s most iconic bands and the irresistible music that influenced generations and is still significant today.
The show in London is directed by Edward Hall and design by Miriam Buether.
