The Story Of A Lifetime

Sold is the story of Mary Prince—a forgotten hero of the British anti-slavery movement. She was born into slavery in the British colony of Bermuda, Mary has witnessed first-hand the horrors and oppressions that millions of people of colour have experienced for centuries. Although she suffered and toiled, she eventually managed to escape the iron cage of slavery and further, became a beacon of freedom and hope. She went on to become an autobiographer and a powerful advocate of freedom. Throughout her life, she fought for the rights of former slaves as well as those who were still bound in bonded labour.

Amantha, in her power-packed performance, brings to life the disturbing truths of slavery and the uphill battles Mary Prince had to endure throughout her life. With unimaginable vigour and passion, she narrates how it felt to be separated from family and loved ones, how it felt to be silenced, oppressed, and being stripped of fundamental human rights, and most importantly, the inhuman experiences of being bought and sold. Sold play tickets are a vehicle to transport the audience into that harsh reality of slavery. At the same time, it shows you how some true forces of nature, like that of Mary Prince, fueled the British Abolitionist Movement.

A Powerful Performance

Amantha’s performance of Sold is deeply inspired by Griot—the age-old storytelling traditions from West Africa. It is dubbed as a milestone in British Black Theatre that paints the authentic picture of a long-gone era. Beyond the historical significance, the music, dance, and the use of traditional folk instruments give the performance a character of its own and appeals to everyone sitting in the audience, no matter what race, class, or colour they belong to.

The opening of the performance at Park Theatre also coincides with Black History Month, making it even more relevant. The Sold play tickets are now available online. If you want to watch the performance in the West End, make sure you order yours now.
