The play

So Many Reasons introduces Melissa, who is a British-Ghanaian millennial and wants to take control of her body. It is evident that growing up is difficult, but for Melissa, it proves to be very tough. The show is all about exploring the generation gap, the cultural dogmas, sexuality and religion. It shoots an open question of what happens when we realise that our mothers may not always know the best.

Melissa, a young religious Christian, is in a bit of crisis and is on a chase to find orgasm. This bold and comedy filled play shows the transformation of Melissa from a child who was accused of being a lesbian as she failed to run fast into a cynical young woman. She was caged and surrounded by the expectations of western and Ghanaian culture as well as her own religion.

Melissa’s Journey

Growing up in a cultural household is tough because, on the one hand, you are asked to adhere to the rules and values given by family. On the other hand, you want to fly freely, leaving all the expectations behind. People who are unfamiliar with these struggles, So Many Reasons are made for them. As the play progresses, you will watch and understand how Melissa faces problems, including familial shame, a Brazilian wax that goes wrong, a crush on a boy and more. When she comes to the conclusion that mothers do not know the best, she holds the key to her life. She starts questioning everything which she has leant from her family, religion and cultural dogmas.

Created and performed by Racheal Ofori, the play went on to win Off West End Theatre Awards for Best Female Performance which makes it worth to get the So Many Reasons tickets. Without much hesitance, book it and grab the best seats at London Soho’s Theatre.
