Orpheus in the Underworld

A musical that looks to defy traditional thinking and concepts, Director Emma Rice breathes magic into Orpheus in the Underworld. The entire production is about a massive party of the gods in hell. Orpheus in the Underworld London is a special play that is sure to leave you enthralled and mesmerised.

Storytelling at its finest

Drawing inspiration from the popular Orpheus and Eurydice myth, this play strings together an alternate tale for the jilted lovers. Eurydice mistakes the ruler of hell, Pluto, as her lover Aristaeus. The musical shows how Orpheus and Eurydice’s marriage falls apart due to a tragedy. Being the central character in the play, Orpheus must do all he can to win back his wife’s love.

While in the original myth, Eurydice suffered a snake bite and died, in Orpheus in the Underworld London, Pluto brings her back to life for a short span and then took her with him to hell. The rest of the story comprises several Gods and characters, such as Venus, Jupiter, Cupid, Morpheus, Mars, Mercury and others.

Evoking comedy at just the right stages, the story is deeply engaging and interesting. It keeps the audience guessing whether Orpheus manages to reclaim his wife and take her back to the world of the living. After a party and an excruciating test set by the gods, can Orpheus succeed in his endeavour? To ensure success, he needs to seek the help of the other gods. Since they are too lazy to help, Orpheus must convince them somehow.

The operetta composed by Offenbach, featuring the ‘Can-can’ is apt for the show. Sian Edwards, the former ENO Music Director returns to conduct the orchestra for the production, bringing years of experience along.
