One Jewish Boy

Highlights

Why You Should Watch One Jewish Boy

The play does not adhere to a linear timeline, choosing instead to tell the story of a North London Jewish boy named Jesse in disjointed scenes. Jesse falls in love with a mixed-race girl from Peckham named Alex. Using neon writing and lightboxes to signal shifts in time, the play spans over a period of 15 years. Jesse grows increasingly paranoid about racism and antisemitism as he witnesses horrifying hate crimes across the globe, and this begins to adversely affect his relationship with Alex. The play is a deep dive into how culture, racial tensions, and fear continues to define our lives.

Jewish Boy disguises itself as a romantic comedy in its critical exploration of increasing radicalism in numerous countries. Playwright Stephen Laughton has won several accolades including the 2019 JB Priestley Award for Young Writers of Promise and the Grierson Film Award. After a sell-out presentation at Islington’s Old Red Lion Theatre, One Jewish Boy is now headed to London’s Trafalgar Studios.
