Show Description – Madame Butterfly
Described by The Sunday Telegraph as the ‘most beautiful show of the year’, Anthony Minghella’s award-winning Madam Butterfly returns to the English National Opera.
Blending a colourful mirage of vibrant costumes, colourful sets, unforgettable cinematic images and traditional Japanese theatre, Minghella’s production has become one of the most iconic stagings of the century.
Giacomo Puccini’s Madam Butterfly premiered in 1904 in Milan. It tells the story of Butterfly, a young Japanese girl who marries Pinkerton, an American naval officer. Will Butterfly ever give up hope that her husband will return from America?
Globally-acclaimed sopranos Dina Kuznetsova and Mary Plazas share the role of Madam Butterfly. Welsh tenors Gwyn Hughes Jones and Timothy Richards play Pinkerton.
