The origin of Luisa Miller

Are you ready to watch the Luisa Miller London opera? It is a three-act opera by Giuseppe Verdi, which is based on the play “Kabale und Liebe” by Friedrich von Schiller, a German dramatist. Luisa Miller is tuned to an Italian libretto by Salvadore Cammarano. The Teatro San Carlo in Naples rejected the initial idea proposed by Verdi. Although he tried to negotiate, he failed. That is when Cammarano’s mind gave birth to the idea of adapting the play by Schiller and Verdi was familiar with it.

Verdi was in Paris from where he continued to work on the initial ideas. He lived there for approximately two years before returning to Busseto, his home town, in 1849. Here, he wrote the music and went to Naples for the rehearsals. Cammarano had convinced him to get rid of the political bits and to concentrate on its romantic elements instead so that censorship could be avoided. On 8th December 1849, the opera was first performed. It became Verdi’s 15th opera and many consider it the dawn of his “middle period”.

Joly’s way of showcasing this sensitive opera

In the Luisa Miller London production, Barbora Horáková Joly securely holds every piece of the tantalising lyrical lines and warm orchestration by Verdi to offer a new-age background to the classical opera. To complement the themes of love, greed, loss and sacrifice, which are the core elements of the production, Joly implements clear, white spaces to provide the feeling these themes require to flourish.

A complex story that will thrill you throughout

Luisa is Miller’s daughter and she loves Carlo. Carlo is actually Rodolfo, the son of a local lord, Walter. Her father is doubtful and his fears grow when Wurm, Walter’s attendant, reveals Carlo’s true identity. Wurm loves Luisa and hopes to marry her. On the other hand, Walter wants his son to marry Federica, a widowed duchess.

Rodolfo tells Federica about his love for another but she will not break the engagement. Miller tells Luisa that Rodolfo has cheated her and is going to marry a wealthy girl. Rodolfo claims his innocence. When Miller threatens to have the father and daughter sent to prison, he frightens Walter saying he would reveal how he and Wurm killed another to become the landlord.

Miller is jailed and Wurm tells Luisa that she can save him only by writing a letter mentioning that she wanted Rodolfo just for his wealth, which Wurm and Walter plan for Rodolfo to read. Wurm and Walter’s threats make Luisa declare her love for Wurm.

When Miller returns from prison, he and Luisa decide to leave the village the following day. That is when Rodolfo enters to confront her about whatever he has come to know. However, Luisa fails to deny that she wrote the letter.
