Level Up

Why Watch Level Up

Featuring Malachi Kirby in the lead role, Level Up is the story of a boy who fights against all odds to make it big. Kirby is well known for his roles in some of the most popular television shows such as Roots, Curfew and Black Mirror.

The production is a joint directorial effort by the Bush Theatre’s new Artistic Director, Lynette Linton and Associate Director Daniel Bailey. Bailey was previously the Associate Director of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, which he had joined as part of the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme. His most famous works include Exhale, I Knew You, Stuff, and Blue/Orange.

Lynette Linton is one of the fastest rising young talents in theatre and does both playwriting and directing, allowing her to have a multifaceted and flexible approach to her work. As someone who believes that collaboration is key, Linton prefers to work with other directors, as she did with Level Up.

A story that talks about how easy it is for youngsters to become sidetracked as a result of bad decisions, Level Up wonderfully captures how the odds are stacked against those who are less fortunate. The production has a partnership with Nativity, which is a charity focused on mentoring young individuals through education, sports, and other positive activities.

The Story

People are expected to grow up and move on to bigger things over time. Perform certain activities to earn coins or money. Use the money to gear up for the boss. Defeat the boss and level up. Life is often eerily similar to video games.

Just like with video games, we must often make choices and decisions in life, that may go on to have a significant impact on our lives. Unlike video games, however, the consequences to our actions are real and not just part of a virtual environment. What happens if we aren’t the ones behind the controller?
