Jerusalem

Sonia Friedman presents the highly anticipated return of Jersualem by Jez Butterworth.

Jerusalem Tickets for a Limited Run are Now Available

After its critically acclaimed record-breaking stints at London’s Apollo Royal Court Theatre, and Broadway’s Music Box Theatre, Jez Butterworth’s iconic play Jerusalem is once again coming back to its home venue in the West End—the Apollo Theatre. The sensational play that almost broke all previous records in the West End box office, had a highly successful run when it premiered back in 2009. The production, starring Mark Rylance and Mackenzie Crook, held consecutive houseful shows before it was transferred to the Apollo Theatre in 2010.

That summer, particularly, was the turning point of the play. Not just it received raving reviews from critics all over, audiences flocked to the theatre that West End has never seen before. You can easily gauge its spellbinding reception by the fact that Jerusalem, even before it went on to its Broadway tour, has been declared “the greatest British play of the century”. Therefore, it is no surprise that when the production hits the theatre once again in the coming autumn, Jerusalem tickets will sell faster than hotcakes. So, if you don’t want to regret not watching the show while you can, go get your tickets today.

A Shocking Story that Resonates

Author Jez Butterworth painted a grim, yet idealistic vision of the toils and conflicts of rural England in this spine-chilling narrative of everyday people. There is no heroic win, no feel-good conclusion, not even any extraordinary romance to appease the audience. Yet, it is something that everyone sitting in the pitch-dark theatre will relate to on a deeper level.

Jerusalem tickets will take you to a remote village of Wiltshire, inhabited by a bunch of troubled people fighting their ways to survive. The protagonist, Johnny “Rooster” Byron, is an eccentric, daredevil of a man who makes ends meet by hustling drugs. On the fateful St. George’s Day, Rooster, a wanted man by the local authorities, finds himself caught amidst a series of hurdles—an eviction notice from the council officials, his arch-rival Troy Whitworth looking to give him a proper kicking, his motley crew of druggies pestering him for his supply of alcohol and narcotics, and his kids waiting for their father to take them to the village fair.

Butterworth’s expansive, gorgeous play keeps coming at the audience with erratic gusts, from bawdy to comic. from furious to winsome. It is essentially a heartfelt lament for England, that still resonates with the audience after all this time, especially in the post-Brexit era.

Old Wine in a New Bottle

The upcoming West End run of Jerusalem returns to stage with its original cast, Mark Rylance playing the celebrated Rooster and Mackenzie Crook starring as Ginger. The Sonia Friedman production will be directed by iconic Ian Rickson, who teams up with production designer Ultz, composer Stephen Warbeck, and lighting designer Mimi Jordan Sherin to recreate the magic.

Don’t forget to place an early order of your Jerusalem tickets. It is not every day that you get to witness the best play of the 21st century at the theatre close to your home.
