Jersey Boys is arguably the best musical in London’s West End.
The show tells the true story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons from the perspective of each of the four band members.
From their humble beginnings in New Jersey through various scrapes with the law, a dubious involvement with the mob unbeknown to some members of the band and the emergence of the group as global superstars.
It is a fascinating story with plenty of laughs and a few tears along the way. The deal between song writer Bob Gaudi and singer Frankie Valli sealed with a spit and a handshake prevails to today and underpins this intriguing tale against the back drop of some truly sensational songs.
Songs include “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, “Sherry”, “December 1963 (Oh, What A Night)”, “My Eyes Adored You”, “Stay”, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”, “Working My Way Back to You”, “Let’s Hang On (To What We’ve Got)”, “Beggin’”and “Rag Doll”, among many others. You are guaranteed to recognise most of them and many will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, a tingle down your spine and your foot uncontrollably tapping. Don’t worry you are not having a heart attack, it’s simply that the tunes in this show are so infectious, so sit back relax and enjoy.
Many of The Four Season’s songs became huge hits for other artists, including The Bay City Rollers version of “Bye Bye Baby” and Andy Williams versions of ) “My Eyes Adored You”, and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”.
Jersey Boys the musical opened on Broadway in 2005 where it won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The show in London opened at the Prince Edward theatre in 2008 where it won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical and has now transferred to the Piccadilly theatre in the heart of London’s West End.
There is some bad language, but only in the context of gritty Jersey Boys style, I took my two young daughters to see the show aged 9 and 11, and they loved it.
