Catch Cyrano de Bergerac in London

Edmond Rostand wrote the play “Cyrano de Bergerac” in 1897. It follows the life of a real person called Cyrano de Bergerac but is written as a fiction. The whole piece uses verses in rhyming couplets of 12 syllables in each line. Although pretty similar to the classical alexandrine form, sometimes the verses are without a cesura. The play has been performed several times, and it has been translated often. It also introduced the French word “panache”, which stands for reckless courage. The character Cyrano is known for his panache and even refers to “my panache” in the piece. The English translations by Anthony Burgess and Brian Hooker are the most famous. However, the newest translation that sets up Cyrano de Bergerac for London is the work of Martin Crimp.

The Role of Cyrano is confirmed!

It has been confirmed! James McAvoy is playing the role of Cyrano. This is his fourth work with director Jamie Lloyd on stage, as he plays Rostand’s 1897 big-nosed polymath hero. This play marks the beginning of a new season of The Jamie Lloyd Company. The multiple award-winning McAvoy needs no introduction after having played many iconic roles like that of “Professor X” in the new X-Men movie titles, and “The Beast” in Split. His stage works include Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, The Tempest and several others. He has proven his acting skills time and time again, and his portrayal of Cyrano de Bergerac for London audiences is another example.

True love is Always True

Cyrano de Bergerac believes that he will never be admired by any woman because of his bulbous nose. So, he makes himself renowned for his verses and bravery. Roxane, his affluent and beautiful cousin, sends him an urgent message, which makes him think she loves him. But, he discovers that she actually loves Christian de Neuvillette, a new handsome guardsman; she wants Cyrano to set them up. He puts aside his feelings for her and helps Christian impress, Roxane. A few minutes after Christian and Roxane’s wedding, they are ordered away to a siege.

Through all the dangers, Roxane never fails to receive a letter from Christian. The notes draw her to him through the enemy lines. When he realises the power of the letters, Christian immediately understands that Roxane loves the writer. He requests Cyrano to reveal the truth and leaves. Christian is mortally wounded during the siege but dies a happy man when Cyrano whispers that he told her everything and she loves Christian.

Roxane starts living in an abbey after Christian’s death, and it has been fifteen years that Cyrano calls her every Saturday afternoon despite all the enemies around. One of those days, as he heads to meet Roxane, he is severely injured but hides it. He is about to read Christian’s last letter to her.

The Cyrano de Bergerac London show is going to hold you down to your seats as you witness a brilliant display of unconditional love. It is unlike anything you have ever seen.
