Show Description – 1984
Since it was published in 1949, George Orwell’s tale of life in the future, in which the authorities are watching your every move, became one of the most important literary works of the twentieth century.
Many of Orwell’s predictions have become uncannily true, spawning terms now etched onto public consciousness, such as Big Brother and Room 101.
Adapted for the stage by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan in 2014, the 1984 play was nominated for Best New Play at the Olivier Awards.
The plot is centred on Winston Smith who works for the Ministry of Truth. Smith’s job is to re-write past newspaper articles so that the historical record always supports present party beliefs. Everything he writes which is rejected is confined to Room 101. Smith is a conscientious worker, but is secretly adverse to the Party and dreams of revolution against ‘Big Brother’.
After its world premiere at Nottingham Playhouse in 2013, 1984 made its West End debut at the Almeida Theatre in 2014. In London, the play enjoyed great reviews, referred to as “A production of sharp ingenuity and jolting dramatic clout,” by The Telegraph.
1984 enjoyed an equally acclaimed run when it transferred to the Playhouse Theatre.
Now Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan’s stage adaptation of Orwell’s classic novel is returning to the Playhouse Theatre once more.
