Rumours are whirling that Sunset Boulevard is going to be part of the English National Opera (ENO) musical theatre season. And that’s not all, it is also believed the production will star Glenn Close, the originator of the musical’s leading role, Norma Desmond…
Glenn Close rumoured to star in Sunset Boulevard once more
Sunset Boulevard is a musical with a book and lyrics by Christopher Hampton and Don Black and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is believed that Hampton and Black are working on ‘revising’ their book for the show, which will play for a ‘limited run’, possibly starting in the spring of 2016 or even not until 2017.
Adding further excitement to the prospect of the classic romantic tragedy being part of the ENO’s musical theatre season is word that Glenn Close will make an extraordinary return to Sunset Boulevard, playing the role of Norma Desmond once more.
Close played the show’s leading character of Norma Desmond more than two decades ago in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical on Broadway.
The Sunset Boulevard musical is based on Billy Wilder’s Academy Award-winning 1950 film of the same name.
The story is centred on Norma Desmond, once a big star of the silent screen period who lives in a crumbling mansion in Los Angeles. Norma’s fading career as a movie star is given a new lease of life when she meets screenwriter Joe Gillis.
This classic romantic tragedy first opened as a musical in London in 1993 and has since enjoyed global popularity and long-running tours.
We’ll keep you posted of any new developments about Sunset Boulevard and Glenn Close’s rumoured London theatre comeback.
