The eagerly-anticipated rumour that the Tony Award-winning musical Memphis is coming to the West End is now set in stone
Tickets for Memphis this autumn are now available
The long-rumoured production will open on 23 October, 2014 at the Shaftesbury Theatre. Previews will begin on October 9. Augmenting the Memphis West End fever further is the news the show was star the sensational British singer Beverley Knight.
Memphis is set in the town of Memphis, Tennessee in the 1950s. The plot is centred on a black singer whose career is on the up and up. Despite gaining increased vocal acclaim, the singer can’t break free from the underground clubs of Memphis. The singer’s fortunes change when she meets a white radio DJ. When the pair unite raw and earthy black soul meets mainstream radio audiences, with electrifying results. This incredible journey of lifting black soul music from the underground to the mainstream includes love, laughter and ‘roof raising’ rock n roll.

Memphis includes a story by Joe DiPietro. The American playwright and author. DiPietro won Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score for Memphis.
In the 64th annual Tony Awards, which took place in 2010, the musical Memphis won four awards, including Best Musical.
One of the main highlights of the forthcoming West End production of Memphis is undoubtedly Beverley Knight. The highly-acclaimed signer has appeared onstage in school productions of West Side Story and The Mikado. Although Knight’s biggest stage performance thus far was her role in The Bodyguard. In September last year, Knight took over the lead role in The Bodyguard from Heather Headley.
“I know how to get inside the emotion of a song and deliver it to an audience in a way that doesn’t overwhelm them,” Knight told the Mail.
The British singer looks set to deliver an equally as emotional and spellbinding performance in Memphis this autumn.
