Based on the real-life events of a group of ladies from a Yorkshire village known as the Calendar Girls, the musical tracks the story of ordinary women who did something extraordinary.

The ladies posed nude for a calendar in order to raise money for a charity close to their heart. Their antics riveted the women into media sensations and household names almost overnight.

Childhood friends Gary Barlow and Tim Firth have co-written the musical. Barlow and Firth grew up in the same village in the North of England and have remained friends ever since. The talented writing duo’s new comedy musical debuted at the Grand Theatre in Leeds where it enjoyed standing ovations every night and a series of rave reviews.

“Good nudes! Barlow’s Calendar Girls are a hit in this bracing, brassy, beautifully British comedy,” wrote the Daily Mail.

“It makes you laugh, it makes you cry, and then it makes you cheer,” said The Times.

A talented cast are heading to the Phoenix to star in this uplifting comedy.

Debbie Chazen plays Ruth in the comedy and is thrilled to be making her musical debut, reprising her role from the stage play The Calendar Girls.

Opera, musical, theatre, radio and film sensation, Sophie-Louise Dann is playing Celia in the musical. Stepping into Jessie’s shoes in Michele Dotrice, who is no stranger to the stage, having joined the Royal Shakespeare Company at the age of 16.

Marian McLoughlin is playing Marie in The Girls. Marian trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and has taken on parts as diverse as Portia in The Merchant of Venice to Evelyn in Absent Friends.

The musical’s stellar cast is backed by an equally as talented creative team, including direction by Tim Firth, who, of course, co-wrote the musical with Gary Barlow. The Girls is produced by David Pugh and Dafydd Rogers.

The Girls is showing at the Phoenix Theatre from Saturday 28 January until Saturday 22 April, 2017.
