The Bodyguard, based on the 1992 hit film which starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston, will premiere in London’s West End from November 2012 starring Heather Headley & Lloyd Owen at the Adelphi theatre in London. Here at Shows in London, we’re wondering if the untimely death of Whitney Houston earlier this year will spark a frenzied interest in the show.
The soundtrack from the film The Bodyguard featured Whitney Houston’s version of the song ‘I Will Always Love You’ which went on to become one of the biggest selling singles of all time by a female artist. It spent a record 14 weeks at the top of the U.S. charts.
Houston’s record sold over 400,000 copies in its second week at the top, making it the biggest selling song in a single week beating the previous record of Bryan Adams’ ‘Everything I Do, I Do It for You’. It then went on to break its own record for the following three weeks, ultimately peaking at 632,000 sales in the week ended December 27, 1992. In total sales of over 4.5 million were achieved for Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’, a phenomenal achievement.
Houston’s 10-week reign in the U.K. set the record for the longest run at the top by a solo female artist in the history of the British singles chart, selling over 1.4 million records in the U.K. alone. She is the only artist to achieve over 10 weeks of chart topping success in the U.S., the U.K. and Australia.
Following Whitney Houston’s death in February 2012, ‘I Will Always Love You’ became the top-selling download on iTunes and returned to the charts in both the U.S. and the U.K.
‘I Will Always Love You’ was written by American singer-songwriter Dolly Parton. It was originally released in 1974 as a country song. Parton’s version reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart twice, earning Dolly Parton the feat of becoming the first artist to achieve a number one record twice with the same song as a singer, and three times as a writer.
The Bodyguard the musical is a romantic thriller and features a number of Whitney Houston’s other songs including Queen of the Night, So Emotional, One Moment in Time, Saving All My Love, I’m Your Baby Tonight, Run to You, I Have Nothing, Jesus Loves Me, and I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
