It’s official – Jamie Lloyd’s critically-acclaimed, sell-out musical Urinetown is transferring to the Apollo Theatre in September

Urinetown the Musical is coming to the West End

The comedy musical Urinetown received its premiere in the UK at the St James Theatre in March this year where it became a huge sell-out success.

A “sharp-witted rampant riot

Written by Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, Urinetown the Musical tells the story of a town that is fit to burst – literally. In the Gotham-esque city of the future, going for a wee has become a punishable offence. Consequently, ‘spending a penny’ proves difficult in Urinetown. When the young hero Bobby Strong appears with a great set of pipes, an uprising against public toilets is began and a revolution unravels in Urinetown!

Talking of the transfer to the Apollo Theatre director Jamie Lloyd said:

“Having attracted a diverse audience of all ages at the St. James earlier this year, I’m bursting to bring our production of this brilliantly off-kilter musical comedy to the West End, where I hope we’ll make an even bigger splash. I’m delighted to return to the Apollo Theatre – the perfect home to our energetic and anarchic cast to run riot in.”

As part of his new season at Trafalgar Studios, Lloyd is currently directing The Commitments and the forthcoming Richard III.

Urinetown the Musical initiated great acclaim when it originally ran on Broadway from 2001 – 2004. Here the quick-witted comedy was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won Best Score, Best Book and Best Direction.

It was at the launch of Urinetown on Broadway where Jamie Lloyd first saw the satirical musical and instantly fell in love with it.

“I remember crying with laughter, and being aware of how incredibly pertinent it was,” said Jamie Lloyd.

Urinetown will run at the Apollo Theatre from 29 September, 2014.

The casting for the West End transfer is still to be announced.
