The Bodyguard Musical Wins Best New Musical Award

The Bodyguard musical wins Best New Musical Award

The Bodyguard the musical won the Best New Musical category at the annual What’s On Stage Awards, the only major prize-giving for theatre voted for purely by the ticket-buying public.

More than 60,000 people took part in the voting for the 2013 Awards, which recognised the theatre achievements of some of the biggest names in the show business worlds of theatre, film and music.

The most prestigious category and amongst the most hard-fought was the award for Best New Musical, which went to The Bodyguard the musical – the stage adaptation of the 1992 film of the same name. Heather Headley, who stars as Rachel Marron in the show in London, the role originated by Whitney Houston in the 1992 film, led the cast of The Bodyguard in the rousing Awards Concert finale performance of “I Will Always Love You”/”I Wanna Dance with Somebody”.

The Awards were announced at a star-studded ceremony in the West End at the Palace theatre, hosted by actor-comedians Mel Giedroyc and Rufus Hound.

The Bodyguard the musical tells the story of former Secret Service agent, Frank Farmer who is hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron from an unknown stalker. Each expects to be in charge – what they don’t expect is to fall in love.

The Bodyguard is a romantic thriller, based on the smash-hit film which starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. The show in London features a whole host of irresistible Whitney Houston classic songs, including One Moment in Time, I Wanna Dance with Somebody and, of course, the legendary I Will Always Love You.

The Bodyguard the musical is currently playing at the Adelphi theatre in London, tickets are available from or call 0871 976 976 7
