Rockin’ through a decade, and going strong!

We Will Rock You, the Queen musical, celebrated a sensational 10 years at the Dominion Theatre in London this week on 14th May 2012. And I was lucky enough to be there. It was an amazing show, with both Brian May and Roger Taylor from Queen on stage, but above all it was the electric atmosphere and the response of the audience that made it such a special occasion.

The opening chords of each song were cheered to the rafters and the hairs on the back of my neck were tingling, what a night, and what a cast.

I was also privileged enough to be there 10 years ago at the opening night. Being a massive Queen fan, I was somewhat underwhelmed 10 years ago, save for the cast who were and still are simply out of this world. But then my expectations had been unrealistically high and looking back, I don’t know really what I was expecting, because the show blows me away every time.

The show was originally panned by the critics and who would’ve thought it would have lasted this long? But I have been back to see it several times over the years and you won’t be disappointed. It is a slightly corny comedy musical that has fantastic music, a brilliant set and above all the most amazing cast that gives you a thrilling, spectacular experience every time. Whilst I say the story is corny, it is in fact very witty and with hindsight, Ben Elton must be a genius to have created a story with such foresight. Who could have predicted that 10 years ago music would be so heavily influenced by reality T.V. shows, boy bands, computer and electronically generated music and downloads with rampant capitalism taking away the pure enjoyment of raw, live musical entertainment? And that is what We Will Rock You is, a superb, live entertainment spectacle, I just love it and my kids love it, and judging by the rapturous applause and loud cheers the show receives – the audiences love it.

So well done to Brian May, Roger Taylor and Ben Elton, the whole creative team and the opportunity that they have given to so many talented musicians and singers. They must all be so proud of their fantastic achievements. Rock On for another 10 years!
