Once is a new musical coming to the Phoenix theatre in London’s West End in March 2013 with the show in London officially opening on the 9th April 2013.
The musical is based on Once the Oscar-winning 2006 Irish musical film set in Dublin. The film starred musician Glen Hansard of the Irish folk rock band The Frames and Markéta Irglová as musicians. Hansard and Irglová composed and performed all of the original songs in the movie.
The film had huge commercial success and won a series of awards including a 2007 Academy Award for Best Original Song for Hansard and Irglová’s song “Falling Slowly”. The soundtrack as a whole also received a Grammy nomination.
Once was adapted as a musical for the theatre on Broadway and has similarly enjoyed huge success in the United States winning 8 Tony Awards, including the prestigious Best Musical theatre on Broadway.
Now the show is set for the London stage with high hopes for similar success and tickets likely to be in hot demand.
Once is an extraordinary, original and irresistible celebration of love, friendship and music. It tells of an Irish busker who sings and plays guitar in a Dublin shopping district where he struggles with the trials and tribulations of performing on the street. Entranced by his music a young Czech immigrant flower seller is fascinated by his songs and the music and persists in watching and listening to him.
The girl reveals that she too is a musician and he asks to hear her play. She plays piano and their music creativity sparks a deep connection and a tender, longing romance that neither of them could have expected. They start to compose songs together.
Once follows their blossoming relationship and the traumas and challenges they face, including their pasts and dealing with ex-partners and prejudices of parents.
Once is an old-fashioned love story that dares to be different, Once is brought to life by a supremely talented cast of actor-musicians who unleash all the giddy exhilaration of an Irish ceilidh live on stage. Featuring all of the magical songs from the original film, including the Oscar-winning “Falling Slowly”, this is an achingly beautiful, thrillingly inspirational show that strikes a truly unforgettable chord.
