There were concerns that people wouldn’t know how to pronounce her name. But following an impressive audition the show’s producers were determined to cast Willemijn, who has ben labelled as the best Elphaba yet.
The Dutch singing superstar Willemijn Verkaik is due to take over the role of Elphaba at the Apollo Victoria theatre in London from the 18th November 2013.
Willemijn Verkaik originated the role of Elphaba in the original German production of Wicked in 2007, having to sing and speak the part in German. Willemijn soon repeated her performance in the original Dutch-language production, which premiered in the Netherlands in 2011. This required her to learn the role of Elphaba in her native tongue.
Willemijn transferred to the U.S. show making her Broadway debut in the English-speaking production of Wicked, marking her third language and even managing to play the part with an American accent.
Willemijn is currently starring in the German production of Mamma Mia! as Donna, before playing the role of Elphaba making her West End debut in Wicked at the Apollo Victoria theatre in London. Her performances begin on the 18th November 2013. Willemijn holds the distinction of being the first actress to perform the role in more than one language.
