Dame Angela knocks them for six at the age of 88, the star of stage and screen soon to be appearing in Blithe Spirit at the Gielgud theatre.
Hollywood superstar and theatre stage veteran actress Dame Angela Lansbury wowed a select invited audience, including our very own Nams, at the launch of her new show in London Blithe Spirit, which is coming to the Gielgud theatre from the 1st March for a strictly limited run of only 15 weeks.
The twice Oscar-nominated actress, for Gaslight in 1944 and The Picture of Dorian Gray in 1945, was recently made a Dame in the New Year’s honours list. Best known for her role as Jessica Fletcher in the T.V. series Murder She Wrote, Dame Angela is returning to the London stage for the first time since 1975 in Noel Coward’s comedy play Blithe Spirit playing the part of Madame Arcati, a role she is reprising from her 2009 performance on Broadway.
At the age of 88, Dame Angela insisted she still has bags of energy to appear on the stage with 8 performances a week: “That’s the one thing I’ve never lost. I have the constitution of a miner” she joked.
She added: “For those women who were lovely, who were known for their beauty and so on, it is darned difficult” commenting on her age, “But I am a character actress.” And a very fine one at that as Dame Angela continues to defy the years and puts in amazing performances in what is bound to be the hot ticket in the West End this spring.
