A new princess in the West End

Kimberley Walsh will play the part of Princess Fiona for the final time this evening, as she makes way for a new leading lady in Shrek the Musical. The production, based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film, is currently showing at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Carly Stenson will be the third to fill the legendary ogress’ shoes on the West End stage. Originally starring Amanda Holden as the green princess when Shrek opened in June 2011, Girls Aloud band member Walsh made her West End debut when she took over the role in October 2011 as Holden left to focus on her pregnancy.

Stenson, on the other hand, is no stage novice – recently playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde at the Savoy Theatre, until the show closed in April 2012 as well as roles in Grease (Palace Theatre, Manchester) and Godspell (Globe Theatre, Blackpool). She is, however, most famous for portraying Steph Cunningham in the popular Channel 4 soap Hollyoaks for over 10 years.

Stenson will star as Princess Fiona opposite Neil McDermott and Dean Chisnall who recently joined the cast to play Lord Farquaad and the title character Shrek, as well as Richard Blackwood who has played Donkey since the show’s opening in June 2011.

A sign of the production’s popularity and success, Shrek is now booking until March 2013.
