It received mixed reviews when it opened in 2002 and some critics dubbed the story ‘corny’, but many of the digs aimed at a global conglomerate controlling music in the future are coming to pass through the likes of Simon Cowell and the other so-called reality talent shows producing manufactured pop stars.
You don’t have to be a diehard Queen fan to enjoy We Will Rock You. The vibrant show is suitable for all ages, and the cast is full of energy and enthusiasm. Of course, in addition, there is the magic of all those Queen songs.
The We Will Rock You Story
In We Will Rock You Planet Earth has been renamed Planet Mall, and is controlled by global corporation Globalsoft, the kids all dress the same and think the same, and they are only allowed to watch movies and listen to music as downloaded from Globalsoft, whose computers generate tunes. It’s an age of Boy Bands and of Girl Bands. Of Boy and Girl Bands. Of Girl Bands with a couple of boys in them that look like girls anyway. Nothing is left to chance, and hits are scheduled years in advance. Musical instruments are banned. It’s a safe, secure Ga Ga world, unless you are a rebel. We won’t give too much away here – unless you’d like to read the full synopsis?
The resistance is growing and down in the lower depths, underneath the gleaming cities, live a band of rebels called The Bohemians who are looking for a leader, someone to lead them to the land of rock. The Bohemians believe that there was once a golden age of rock when the kids formed their own bands and wrote their own songs.
The legend says that somewhere on Planet Mall instruments still exist. Somewhere, the mighty axe of a great and hairy guitar god lies buried deep in rock. The Bohemians need a hero to find this axe and draw it from stone. Is the one who calls himself Galileo that man?
Galileo is but a poor boy from a poor family. His love interest is the girl they call Scaramouche. They don’t conform with the Ga Ga Kids, but the thought police from Globalsoft are out to get them. Will they get to them first? Will Galileo and Scaramouche have to face the ire of the leader of Globalsoft, the Killer Queen? Will they be consigned to Oblivion across the Seven Seas of Rhye? Who is Galileo? Where is the Hairy One’s lost axe? Where is the place of living rock? Can you stop your feet from tapping and your hands from clapping?
It’s silly, it’s fun but above all We Will Rock You is one of the most entertaining things to do in London.

Reviews
"I think the main thing that stood out for me about this musical were the cast, who blew me away with their amazing voices and renditions of all of Queen’s classics. Energetic and enthusiastic, and it is a terrific show with fantastic music. The show is really good fun and will have you clapping along and tapping your feet throughout. There is some bad language in the show but I’d still recommend it to children over 12. It’s tongue in cheek and great fun with over twenty Queen hits."
"The main draw is a punchy soundsystem ringing to the katana-sharp live renditions of the band's material."
"The impressive set with sophisticated hydraulics and huge video screens bearing computer-animated scenes conjure up a colourful vision of the future...The songs will have even the most curmudgeonly punter tapping their feet and remind you just how fabulous Queen were."
