The Audience
Summary
Starring Dame Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II
In 2012, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Diamond Jubilee and now a timely new play will be showing in London, starring Dame Helen Mirren
During her 60 year reign, a unique meeting has taken place each week. The British Prime Minister has had an audience with the Queen – the subject matter of which legendarily remains confidential between the two parties, even from their own spouses.
The Audience the play envisages several of the meetings that would have taken place at critical moments from the past 60 years, and although 12 Prime Ministers have come and gone, Elizabeth II remains the one constant.
Although The Audience portrays the private meetings for the head of the British Government to discuss parliamentary matters with the monarch, who remains politically neutral, there are nevertheless two big personalities at the table – and these discussions are imagined to be both friendly and familiar at times to volatile at others. And as the Queen offers her thoughts and advice on each occasion, she is sure to reveal her usually guarded personality, a little at a time.
The magnificent Dame Helen Mirren, a true veteran of the West End, who previously played Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film The Queen – for which she won a BAFTA, Golden Globe and an Oscar – will reprise this role for the stage play The Audience. Prime Ministers will be played by Michael Elwyn (Anthony Eden), Nathaniel Parker (Gordon Brown) and Rufus Wright (David Cameron), who join Haydn Gwynne (Margaret Thatcher), Edward Fox (Winston Churchill) and Paul Ritter (John Major) in the roles which have already been announced.
The team behind the show hold equally high theatrical acclaim. The Audience is directed by Stephen Baldry, who also directed Billy Elliot the Musical, and is designed by Bob Crowley, who also worked on the show Mary Poppins at the Prince Edward Theatre.
With a stellar cast and creative team, and probing subject matter, The Audience is bound to be the latest hit show in London.
