Privates on Parade is an award-winning British farce written in the 1970s by Peter Nichols, which took home the prized gong of Best New Comedy at the 1977 Olivier Awards.

The show focuses on the events and undertakings of the S. A. D. U. S. E. A. (Song and Dance Unit – South East Asia), a fictitious Pierrot troupe during the Anti-British National Liberation War in the 1940s – and their new arrival in the form of Private Steven Flowers. At the heart of the group is Captain Dennis, played by Simon Russell Beale, a flamboyant cross-dressing performer.

Although Privates on Parade presents the audience with a world of gay banter and drag shows, it also touches the deeper and darker issues of guerrilla warfare in the Malayan jungle. It is the first in the Michael Grandage Company's Season of Five Plays.

Reviews

show Reviews
Michael Billington, The Guardian

"Much more than a star vehicle for Simon Russell Beale, it offers a heady mix of personal memoir, musical parody and jaundiced account of postwar colonial politics."

Charles Spencer, The Telegraph

"Gloriously entertaining and often deeply touching."

Staff Review

A fantastic show from start to finish, well-written, full of camp one-liners and musical numbers all performed by a strong cast, led by the wonderful Simon Russell Beale.
