Part of 2012’s World Shakespeare Festival

Shakespeare’s romantic comedy, originally set in 16th century Sicily, is now relocated to the exotic and enchanting India, in Iqbal Khan’s new interpretation of Much Ado About Nothing, the tale of two juxtaposing couples as they face many dilemmas.

Hero and Claudio, a charming and fair couple who are very much in love, find their trust tested by deception and treachery at the hands of Don John, the spiteful and wicked illegitimate brother of the prince Don Pedro.

Meanwhile, Beatrice and Benedick sit on the other end of the scale, as reluctant lovers. Despite their long-standing affronts towards each other, they find that, with a little involvement from Don Pedro and friends, their dysfunction evolves into deep affection and true love.

At the time Shakespeare would have written Much Ado About Nothing, tales of lovers duped into believing untruths about the other were commonplace in Northern Italy. However, the classic plot and masterful directorship makes for an interesting retelling of the story.

Playing Beatrice is Meera Syal, who is well known to London theatre audiences for recent roles in “The Killing Of Sister George” and “Shirley Valentine”. She is also known for numerous television shows, which include “Goodness Gracious Me”, “The Kumars at No. 42” , “Doctor Who” and “Holby City”.
