Julius Caesar
Summary
Part of 2012’s World Shakespeare Festival
The concept behind Gregory Doran’s new production of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar is built around the developments in Africa in recent decades. In several African states, the world has watched as liberation activists have lead their nations to supposed freedom, only to claim dictatorial power and rule with tyrannical regimes in some cases.
An all-black cast perform in Doran’s new interpretation, which relocates the story to a fragmented African state whose political situation evidently resonates of Caesar’s ancient Rome.
As with Shakespeare’s original, the title character does not feature heavily. Instead, the story predominantly follows Marcus Brutus as he confronts the consequences of betraying honour, loyalty and friendship.
