Swedish triumph comes to the West End this spring
Please note: Doktor Glas is performed in Swedish with English surtitles
After success on the Swedish stage since it opened in 2006, the Swedish-language Doktor Glas is to run for a month in spring 2013 at the Wydham’s Theatre, opening on April 16th.
With surtitles in English to mimic renderings of imported dramas such as Borgen, The Killing and Wallander, this challenging play focuses on a physician who falls in love with the beautiful young wife of a corrupt clergyman, Rev. Gregorius. She has placed confidence in him that she is dissatisfied with her marriage, and Doktor Glas wishes to help her however he can, which poses a clash between the love he feels for her and the fact that she is already in an adulterous relationship of her own.
Doktor Glas first appeared in Hjalmar Söderberg’s novel from 1903, while 2013 sees the story celebrate the fiftieth year since it was first published in English. Old questions of marital rights arise, and the different era in which the story is set makes the play a period piece which has become a controversial canonical text in Sweden.
Krister Henriksson will play the part of Glas and will also co-direct the piece. He played the role of Wallander in the original Swedish adaptation of the novels of Henning Mankell. Mankell’s books have sold well in the last few years on the back of the British version of the series starring Sir Kenneth Branagh. Henriksson’s acclaim in Sweden equals that of Branagh’s in Britain, so it’s an opportunity to see a fantastic actor bring to life the sort of role one can imagine Sir Kenneth playing.
Doktor Glas ought to be a curious addition to 2013’s theatre shows in London.
